There was a season in my life when nothing seemed to be unfolding the way I expected. A door I was certain God had opened suddenly closed. Plans I had carefully made fell apart one by one. I remember sitting at my kitchen table one quiet morning, staring out the window, wondering why things weren’t going the way I thought they should. Looking back now, I can see that God was guiding me all along—even when I couldn’t see the road ahead.

The Verse & What It Means

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.” — Proverbs 3:5-6

These words are simple, but they can be surprisingly difficult to live out.

Most of us like to understand what’s happening in our lives. We want clear answers, predictable outcomes, and some assurance that everything will work out exactly as we planned. Yet life rarely unfolds that way. Unexpected health concerns appear. Relationships change. Financial challenges arise. Dreams take longer than expected.

This verse reminds us that trust begins where understanding ends.

God never asks us to figure everything out. He doesn’t require us to see the entire journey before taking the next step. Instead, He invites us to trust Him with our whole hearts—even when circumstances seem confusing.

Notice that the verse doesn’t say, “Trust God when everything makes sense.” It says to trust Him and not rely solely on our own understanding. That’s because our perspective is limited. We see only a small part of the story, while God sees the beginning, the middle, and the end.

When we surrender our plans, fears, and questions to Him, He promises to guide our paths. It may not always be the route we expected, but it will be the one He knows is best.

The Story

A friend of mine spent years preparing for a job she deeply wanted. She worked hard, prayed faithfully, and felt certain the opportunity would become hers. When the position was offered to someone else, she was devastated.

For months she wrestled with disappointment. She questioned why God would allow something she believed was so right to slip away.

About a year later, an entirely different opportunity appeared. It wasn’t something she had considered before, but she decided to pursue it. That position led to meaningful friendships, personal growth, and a sense of purpose she hadn’t experienced before.

One afternoon she told me, “If I had gotten what I wanted back then, I would have missed what God had planned.”

That statement stayed with me.

How often do we judge God’s plan based on what we can see today? We assume a closed door is a failure when it may actually be protection. We view delays as setbacks when they may be preparation. We interpret uncertainty as abandonment when God is quietly working behind the scenes.

Years later, my friend still thanks God for the prayer that wasn’t answered the way she expected.

The Lesson

Trust God with the next step, not the entire staircase.

We often want a detailed map of the future. God usually gives us enough light for today.

Next to it, write these words:

“Lord, I trust You with this.”

You may still have questions. You may still feel uncertain. But trust isn’t the absence of questions—it’s choosing to place those questions in God’s hands.

Every time fear tries to take control, return to that simple prayer. Trust grows one surrender at a time.

God has been faithful before, and He will be faithful again.

Father, we thank You that we do not have to carry the weight of knowing everything. Help us trust You when the road ahead seems unclear.
