Comedians Shane Gillis and Tony Hinchliffe were spotted in the crowd, as were Kid Rock, Reddit cofounder Alexis Ohanian, NHL stars Matthew and Brady Tkachuk, and Swedish soccer legend Zlatan Ibrahimović. The main event delivered genuine sporting drama. American fighter Justin Gaethje knocked off Illa Topuria in a bloody four-round contest to claim the new lightweight championship — a result UFC commentator Joe Rogan called “one of the biggest upsets in the history of the sport,” according to Yahoo News.
But the night’s most tender moment came from Brazilian fighter Mauricio Ruffy, who dropped to one knee — metaphorically speaking — after a brutal first-round knockout win over Michael Chandler. With a translator’s help, Ruffy addressed his partner from inside the cage: “Not long ago, when I first met my wife, Nadine, I wanted to propose, but I didn’t have the means to do so. Nadine, I love you. Will you marry me since we’re right here in the White House?” From the crowd, Nadine answered with an enthusiastic thumbs-up.
The Controversies That Followed the Fights
Not everything on the night landed cleanly. Fighter Josh Hokit repeated an unfounded and offensive conspiracy theory about former first lady Michelle Obama during a post-fight interview with Rogan. According to Variety, the words were not addressed further in the broadcast. Hokit later walked over to Trump and placed his UFC championship belt chain around the president’s neck.
Weather also threatened to derail the evening. The National Weather Service had forecast scattered thunderstorms and potentially damaging wind gusts for Sunday night — a serious concern given that the towering metal “Claw” structure could have acted as a lightning rod. Under safety protocols, any lightning detected within a six-mile radius would have required a 30-minute suspension. In the end, a storm system moving in from southern Virginia pushed the start back by just 45 minutes, enough to stay within safety guidelines.
Legal Challenges, Crypto Deals, and a $60 Million Price Tag
The event almost didn’t happen at all. A lawsuit filed by the Public Integrity Project attempted to block UFC Freedom 250 on the grounds that officials had bypassed federal regulations for private events on government property, and that the event created a conflict of interest because Trump holds stock in TKO, UFC’s parent company. A judge dismissed the suit on Friday, ruling that plaintiffs failed to establish sufficient legal standing or prove irreparable harm.
Then there was the money. UFC announced on Friday that cryptocurrency firm World Liberty Financial — backed by Eric Trump, Donald Trump Jr., and Zach Witkoff, the son of Trump’s chief diplomatic negotiator — would contribute to a $250,000 athlete bonus pool, according to Reuters. The overall cost of the event exceeded $60 million, per a sworn declaration from White House management director Joshua Fisher filed as part of the lawsuit. TKO president Mark Shapiro had previously told Wall Street analysts the company expected to absorb roughly $30 million in losses on the event, despite sponsorship deals with Ram Trucks, Crypto.com, and Monster Energy. Trump said before the event that UFC was footing the bill.
The White House pushed back on conflict-of-interest allegations, with a spokesman saying: “The Fake News’ continued attempts to fabricate conflicts of interest are irresponsible and reinforce the public’s distrust in what they read.”

UFC Freedom 250 was equal parts sports spectacle, political statement, and birthday bash — and it delivered on all three fronts, for better or worse.
