I had never felt so lost.

I remember standing in the doorway of my youngest daughter’s bedroom just a few hours after we dropped her off at college. The bed was neatly made. The closet was empty except for a few forgotten hangers. There were no shoes by the door, no laundry basket waiting to be carried downstairs, no music drifting from behind a closed door.

For years, I had dreamed about having a little more peace and quiet.

That afternoon, I got exactly what I wanted.

And I cried in the middle of a perfectly clean room.

The Silence I Wasn’t Prepared For

People warned me that I would miss my children when they grew up.

What nobody told me was how strange the silence would feel.

For nearly three decades, my days had revolved around being someone’s mother. School lunches. Soccer games. Doctor appointments. Birthday parties. Homework questions. Late-night conversations.

Even after my children became adults, there was still someone calling to ask where we kept an important document or whether a casserole could be frozen.

Then suddenly, there wasn’t.

The morning after my daughter left, I woke up at six o’clock out of habit. For a few seconds, everything felt normal.

Then I remembered.

Nobody needed breakfast.

Nobody needed a ride.

Nobody needed me to remind them about anything.

I wandered through the house carrying my coffee, unsure what to do with myself.

It wasn’t just that I missed my daughter.

I missed the role I had played for so long.

Motherhood had given shape to my days. It had provided purpose without me ever having to think about it. When that chapter changed, I felt as though a piece of my identity had quietly packed its bags and left too.

The hardest part wasn’t the empty bedroom.

It was wondering who I was now.

Learning That Love Doesn’t End When Parenting Changes

A few months later, I sat on my front porch with a friend who was a few years ahead of me in this season of life.

I confessed something I hadn’t said out loud before.

“I feel useless.”

She didn’t laugh.

She didn’t tell me to stay busy.

She simply nodded.

Then she said something I have never forgotten.

“Margaret, your children still need you. They just need you differently.”

That sentence changed everything.

For years, my job had been managing details, solving problems, and keeping everyone moving forward.

Now my role was becoming something else.

I became the person my daughter called when she felt homesick.

I became the voice my son wanted to hear after a difficult week.

I became the keeper of family stories, traditions, recipes, and memories.

My children no longer needed a manager.

They needed a steady place to land.

And little by little, I realized that purpose doesn’t disappear when a season ends.

Sometimes it simply changes shape.

Motherhood wasn’t over.

It was evolving.

I still had love to give, wisdom to share, and a family to care about.

I just had to learn a new way of showing up.

<figure class="wp-block-image empty nest season right now, here’s something I wish someone had suggested to me sooner.

Take a notebook.

Write down three things that have always interested you but were pushed aside while you were raising children.

Not things you think you should do.

Things you genuinely enjoy.

Maybe it’s gardening.

Maybe it’s painting.

Maybe it’s joining a Bible study, taking a photography class, volunteering, or finally learning to bake sourdough bread.

For years, many of us became experts at putting ourselves last.

There’s beauty in that sacrifice.

But now there may be room to rediscover parts of yourself that have been waiting patiently in the background.

You don’t have to reinvent your life overnight.

You don’t need a grand plan.

Just take one small step toward something that brings you joy.

The house may be quieter than it once was.

That doesn’t mean your story is over.

It may simply mean a new chapter is beginning.

A Final Thought

If your last child recently left home, I want you to know something.

The ache you feel is real because the love was real.

You are not foolish for missing them.

You are not weak for feeling lost.

And you are certainly not finished.

The same heart that spent years caring for others still has beautiful things ahead of it.

Some chapters end quietly.

But sometimes, in that unexpected silence, God begins writing a new one.

I’d Love to Hear From You

What was the hardest part of the
