Peter once approached Jesus with what seemed like a generous question: “Lord, how many times should I forgive someone who sins against me? Up to seven times?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead of setting a limit, Jesus answered, “Not seven times, but seventy-seven times” (or “seventy times seven,” depending on the translation), emphasizing that forgiveness is not meant to be counted but practiced continually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A king decided it was time to settle accounts with his servants. One servant was brought before him owing an unimaginably large debt\u2014so enormous that there was no possible way he could ever repay it. Justice demanded payment, and since he had nothing to offer, the king ordered that the servant, his family, and everything he owned be sold to recover at least part of the loss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The servant fell to his knees and begged, “Please be patient with me, and I will pay back everything.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The promise was impossible, but the king was moved with compassion. Instead of demanding repayment, he canceled the entire debt and let the servant go free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The forgiven servant walked away carrying the greatest gift imaginable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But almost immediately, he found a fellow servant who owed him a comparatively tiny amount of money. Grabbing him by the throat, he demanded payment on the spot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His fellow servant fell down and pleaded with almost the very same words: “Be patient with me, and I will pay you back.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This time, however, mercy never came. The forgiven servant refused to wait and had the man thrown into prison until the debt could be paid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the other servants witnessed what had happened, they were deeply distressed. They reported everything to the king.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The king summoned the unforgiving servant and said, “You wicked servant! I canceled all that debt because you begged me. Shouldn’t you have had mercy on your fellow servant just as I had mercy on you?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In righteous anger, the king handed him over to be punished until his debt was paid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jesus concluded with a sobering reminder that God’s forgiveness is meant to transform our hearts, leading us to forgive others from the heart as we ourselves have been forgiven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the ancient world, debt was far more than a financial inconvenience. It could result in losing one’s land, freedom, or even the freedom of family members. Selling debtors into servitude was a recognized legal practice in many parts of the Roman world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One lesser-known detail makes Jesus’ story even more powerful: the servant’s debt is described using the enormous amount of ten thousand talents<\/strong>. A talent was the largest unit of currency, and “ten thousand” was the highest common Greek number used in everyday speech. Together, the phrase communicates an almost unimaginably large debt\u2014effectively saying the servant owed an amount beyond human ability to repay. In contrast, the second servant owed only one hundred denarii<\/strong>, a debt that, while significant, was tiny by comparison.
